The start of 2013 has brought even more shocking findings for young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) with the publication of the fifth Youth Index from The Prince’s Trust.
The Youth Index surveyed 2136 young people aged 16-25, of which 289 identified as NEET. The Index shows that NEETs are more than twice as likely to feel unable to cope as their peers and that 49 percent of NEETs are unhappy across all areas of their life, compared to 14 percent of young people in employment, education or training.
This backs up findings in our report, The Human Cost, that being out of employment, education or training has long-lasting effects on young people’s mental health and wellbeing, most notably their confidence, self-esteem and motivation.
The Index also states that 36 percent of NEETs feel that they have no future due to the recession, with 53 percent of those unemployed for over 12 months feeling as though they have been permanently left behind due to the recession; further echoing FutureYou findings that 60 percent of NEETs are not confident that they will find employment in 2013.
